{"id":272,"date":"2025-09-07T22:52:28","date_gmt":"2025-09-07T22:52:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globaltalentholding.com\/?p=272"},"modified":"2025-09-09T12:19:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T12:19:08","slug":"tom-hanks-award-ceremony-canceled-by-west-point-group-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globaltalentholding.com\/index.php\/2025\/09\/07\/tom-hanks-award-ceremony-canceled-by-west-point-group-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Tom Hanks award ceremony canceled by West Point group: Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An award ceremony for \u201cSaving Private Ryan\u201d star Tom Hanks has been canceled by the West Point Association of Graduates, an alumni association for the the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., according to The Washington Post.<\/p>\n<p>The Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2025\/09\/06\/tom-hanks-west-point\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported Saturday<\/a> that the award ceremony was canceled by the West Point Association of Graduates because the association wants the school to pay more attention to getting future officers ready for war.<\/p>\n<p>In a faculty email, retired Army Col. Mark Bieger, who serves as president and CEO of the West Point Association of Graduates, let others know about the choice to cancel the ceremony, according to the Post, which said it obtained the email.<\/p>\n<p>Hanks would have been awarded the Sylvanus Thayer Award, according to the Post.<\/p>\n<p>On the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westpointaog.org\/traditions\/wpaog-awards\/thayer-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">West Point Association of Graduates<\/a> website, the association states the award goes \u201cto an outstanding citizen of the United States whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify personal devotion to the ideals expressed in the West Point motto, \u2018Duty, Honor, Country.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear whether Hanks, who has starred in several movies honoring U.S. veterans of foreign wars and was instrumental in getting the World War II memorial built on the National Mall, will still get the award.<\/p>\n<p>Hanks has a history of criticizing President Trump, saying in June 2024 that Trump securing a second White House term could indicate that the U.S.\u2019s \u201cjourney to a more perfect union has missteps in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s always reason to be worried about the short term,\u201d Hanks told CNN\u2019s Christiane Amanpour when asked if he&#8217;d worry about the country&#8217;s \u201ccommitment to democracy and freedom\u201d if Trump won later that year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I look at the longer term of what happened, I think there\u2019s an ongoing \u2014 look, our Constitution says, \u2018We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union\u2019 \u2014 that journey to a more perfect union has missteps in it,\u201d Hanks added.<\/p>\n<p>The Hill has reached out to the West Point Association of Graduates and a representative for Hanks for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An award ceremony for \u201cSaving Private Ryan\u201d star Tom Hanks has been canceled by the West Point Association of Graduates, an alumni association for the the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., according to The Washington Post.
